MEXICO -- Boxing, which has a rich history in this area, is taking hold again. This time, it's through a new club called Moontide Boxing.
Jeff Prevost, now an official USA Boxing coach, has been involved with the sport of boxing for five years.
As for why he wants to teach boxing, he said, "I'm really at that age where I want to give back. Once boxing is in your blood, it's hard to get out of the sport."
Prevost said also trains with the boxers, which keeps him active as well. Training is done in intervals of three minutes on and one minute off. They do things like the heavy bag, pushups, bumpees, situps, the speed bag and running.
For someone who would like to take up this sport (males and females as young as age eight), experience is not necessary, said Prevost. But those who stay with the program will need to "bust their butt, and you can't be a smoker."
Participants who work hard in the gym and do the work outside (such as running) will not only develop a work ethic but will lose weight as well.
Moontide Boxing at DW's Fitness Factory operates on Mondays beginning at 5:30 p.m. Those interested can call Prevost after noon at 357-5463.
On one side of the room, located upstairs at the Mexico Recreation Building, is the Judo and Jujitsu program taught by facility owner Dawson Walton. On the other side is the boxing program, complete with a boxing ring, a speed bag and a heavy bag.
Prevost has helped train Achelas Ankers, 22, for the past 18 months. And for about five months, he has worked with Elliott Eno, 16.
Two months ago, Prevost took Ankers and Eno down to Somersworth, NH for amateur boxing matches. Competitors wears safety head gear and compete in up to three two-minute rounds.
Ankers said he started through the Judo and Jitsu program and then moved over to do boxing. As for what he likes about boxing, he said, "There's so much technique. You have to work ahead; it's a reactive sports. Boxing requires a lot of discipline and a good work ethic."
Eno said because of the adrenalyn, he can't remember much about his first-ever boxing match. However, "there's nothing like it. I learned there's so much I need to work on."
He said he's wanted to box for two years. Eno started about five years ago after learning about Walton's fitness center.
Dawson Walton, owner of DW's Fitness Factory, is a personal trainer and strength trainer. Membership is $20 per month and $15 for students. The facility is open five days a week. For more information, call Walton at 357-2671.
