Cougar teams advance to regional finals
DIXFIELD -- A terrific day Monday for the Dirigo baseball and softball teams has advanced them to the Western C regionals, slated to take place Wednesday at St. Joseph's College in Standish.
This will be repeat performance for the Cougars, who both played here in 2012. The 13-5 girls will take on Madison at 3 p.m., with the 16-2 boys playing 16-2 St. Dom's for a third time this season beginning at 7 p.m.
The Cougar girls only hit during the first four innings was a solo homerun off the bat of Ambyr Wilson. However, the pitching duel was busted wide open a year later with a seven spot of Rebel ace Jessie Dirago in support of their hurler, Cami Denney.
In that frame, Dirigo tallied just three hits, but Telstar hurt themselves with an error, a hits batsman and five walks.
The 9-2 victory also include a double play turned by the Cougars as Denney threw to Wilson at first for one out and she relayed a throw home to Lauren Henderson to nab a runner at the plate.
On the boys' side, top-seed Dirigo, which overcame a three-run deficit in the quarterfinals, did it again by fighting out of a five-run hole to edge Hall-Dale by 7-6.
The Cougars tallied three runs in their first at bat, and two each over the second and third frames. Four of Dirigo's seven hits went for extra bases, including a two-run homer by T.J. Frost that tied the score. Chad Snowman, who hurled 6 and two-third innings of two-hit relief, helped his own cause with a two-run triple in front of a Tyler Frost RBI double. Spencer Trenoweth also plated a run with a triple.
