ANDOVER/RUMFORD- While most people were sitting at home talking about how they're going to make the new year even better than the last, a group of local outdoor enthusiasts were busy making the most of unseasonal weather and a lack of snow on the ground.
Deb Murphy, her husband Tim, friends Neil and Beth Giberson and Tom and Linda Puiia began a yearly tradition six years ago when they snowshoed to the top of a mountain near their friends, Mike and Thea Dunn's home.
“It was an absolute blizzard outside,” noted Deb. “We ended up having a cookout up there and everything. It was a blast! That's when we decided we needed to make it an annual hike. Besides, it makes you mellow out on New Year's Eve if you have a hike to look forward to.”
This year, some members of the group had to work on New Year's Day, so the group just pushed the hike back a day. They decided to stay close to home and take advantage of the well-manicured and marked trails leading up to the 2,214-foot summit of White Cap Mountain.
Outdoor enthusiasts normally spend time snowshoeing and skiing the trail in the winter, but with the lack of snow, the hike called for a set of crampons or Yak Trax, due to the icy conditions. Access to the trail can be made via the East Andover Road parking lot. A fully-detailed topographic map can be found by visiting www.mahoosuc.org, the local land trust that works to preserve the mountain for future generations to recreate.
Deb noted that it normally takes them about an hour or so to get to the top, but due to the icy conditions, they took a little longer staying off to the side of the trails in the trees in spots.
“In some of the previous years,” noted Deb. “We've had to deal with storms and one year it was only 32-degrees out. We've had so much fun on these hikes.”
Deb shared that they got a little bit of a late start, but it was a gorgeous hike up the winding trails and they didn't encounter ice until about half way up.
The trails, during the summer months, are surrounded by fruitful blueberry bushes loaded with a harvest hikers at summer's end, in this case, the blueberry bushes and other vegetation worked well for getting around the ice-laden trails.
As the group made their way to the summit, Deb noted that the weather was beautiful and sunny. “It was really pretty, but then when we got to the top it began to cloud in and it got really windy and cold. We didn't spend much time at the top. We could see a snow storm moving in over the mountains. We started down and we were getting hit with pellets of snow. It was a mixed bag of weather.”
While on the top of White Cap, hikers can enjoy the 360-degree views of Roxbury and Record Hill wind turbines, as well as Andover, Rumford and the many mountains in the distance.
Descending the mountain, they experienced the reverse in weather and by the time they hit the bottom, it was sunny again.
Deb stressed that it's a great hike to do anytime of the year, but you better have the right gear for a winter hike. “It gets pretty slippery and you want to be sure you have poles and a good set of crampons. Not to mention the change in weather. So, make sure you're dressed properly.”
As hiking becomes more and more popular, local outfitters cater to the outdoor enthusiast. So, as you plan your winter hike, make sure you're prepared.
The following is a list provided by the Appalachian Trail Club of items you should incorporate in your pack, even for a short hike, because you never know what might happen.
Packing List for Day Trip:
Snowshoes or cross-country skis, trekking poles, day pack, first-aid kit, map of the area, compass, water bottles, headlamp, pocket knife, waterproof matches, fire starter and a snow shovel. Food you should pack includes: jerky, energy bars, bagels, cheese, salami and sesame sticks. You should be outfitted in a minimum of the following: liner hat, sunglasses, underclothing/vest/sweatshirt, waterproof jacket, liner gloves, waterproof pants, liner socks, gaiters and boots. It doesn't hurt to bring along extra hat, socks, outer mittens/gloves and long shirt.

Maybe even then, when I saw Tommy rushing about that field, undisguised delight on his face to be accepted back in the fold again, about to play the game at which he so excelled, maybe I did feel a little stab of pain. What I do remember is that I noticed Tommy was wearing the light blue polo shirt he'd got in the Sales the previous month--the one he was so proud of. I remember thinking: "He's really stupid, playing football in that. It'll get ruined, then how's he going to feel?" Out loud, I said, to no one in christian louboutin evening particular: "Tommy's got his shirt on. His black christian louboutin favourite polo shirt."
I don't think anyone heard me, because they were all laughing at Laura--the big clown in our group--mimicking one after the other the expressions that appeared on Tommy's face as he ran, waved, called, tackled. This time Ruth heard me, but she must have thought I'd meant it as some kind of joke, because she laughed half-heartedly, then made some quip of her own.
Then the boys had stopped kicking the ball about, and were standing in a pack in the mud, their chests gently rising and falling as they waited for the team picking to start. The two captains who emerged were from Senior 3, though everyone knew Tommy was a better player than any of that year. "Look at him," someone behind me said. "He's completely convinced he's going to be first pick. In any case he soon stopped and stood there, glaring after them, his face scarlet. Then he began to scream and shout, a nonsensical jumble of swear words and insults.
We'd all seen plenty of Tommy's tantrums by then, so we came down off our stools and spread ourselves around the room. Then everyone was talking at once, about how Tommy never even tried to be creative, about how he hadn't even put anything in for the Spring Exchange. I suppose the truth was, by that stage, each of us was secretly wishing a guardian would come from the house and take him away. And although we hadn't had any part in this latest plan to rile Tommy, we had taken out ringside seats, and we were starting to feel guilty. But there was no sign of a guardian, so we just kept swapping reasons why Tommy deserved everything he got. Then when Ruth looked at her watch and said even though we still had time, we should get back to the main house, nobody argued.
Tommy was still going strong as we came out of the pavilion. The house was over to our left, and since Tommy was standing in the field chloe leather bags straight ahead of us, there was no need to go anywhere near him. In any case, he was facing the other way and didn't seem to register us at all. All the same, as my friends set off along the edge of the field, I started to drift over towards him. "It's nothing to worry about," I said, before the silence got humiliating for him. "It'll come off. If you can't get it off yourself, just take it to Miss Jody."He went on examining his shirt, then said grumpily: "It's nothing to do with you anyway."He seemed to regret immediately this last remark and looked at me sheepishly, as though expecting me to say something comforting back to him. But I'd had enough of him by now, particularly with the girls watching--and for all I knew, any number of others from the windows of the main house. So I turned away with a shrug and rejoined my friends.
Ruth put an arm around my shoulders as we walked away. "At least you got him to pipe down," she said. "Are you okay? Mad animal."
