Book talk, slideshow Friday
PERU- Christine J. Jamison, a former resident of Peru, has authored a book, Off the Grid and Glad I Did. She will be visiting the Peru Town Office on Friday at 1 p.m. to feature her new book and to share a slideshow.
Originally from, and now living in Washington State, Jamison authored a book about living in West Peru. She and her husband, John, who was born and raised here, moved from a conventional home in the Northwest with neighbors on all sides, to a solar home here in the woods of the Northeast. The Northwest’s temperate climate did nothing to prepare suburban Jamison for the extremes of the Northeast. She was in for some surprises living in the woods of Maine.
Her story is about growing and changing while experiencing the great state of Maine. She describes her adventures cross-country skiing, learning to plow snow, combatting black flies with a special bug helmet, and also breeding and milking goats. She experienced mud season, tapping maple trees, and growing a big garden. Jamison describes her encounters with moose and other critters.
As Lou Bergez of California says, “I really enjoyed reading Off the Grid and Glad I Did. It was both informative and funny at times. It made me realize what a proud people Mainers are. Christine always seems to have a great attitude, especially for living through the winters in Maine. This book was written so well and so realistically that it made me feel like I was there. Great read!”
A teacher for thirty years, Jamison taught Family and Consumer Science at Mountain Valley High School and at the University of Maine at Farmington. She just recently retired from teaching and plans to pursue her love of photography, gardening, reading, and sewing. Jamison, a dedicated Christian, attended the Peru Baptist Church while she lived here. She and her husband return to Maine each summer to visit family and to stay in their remote camp in Amherst.
Jamison is having a book talk at 1 p.m. on Friday, July 12, at the Peru Town Office. Her presentation will include a slide show. Autographed copies of Off the Grid and Glad I Did will be available for $13. It is also available at smashwords.com in nine different digital versions, including Kindle, Nook, and iPad.
