Carthage teen dies in dirt bike accident
CARTHAGE -- A 15-year-old boy died Sunday evening while driving a small, motorized, two-wheel dirt bike, a spokesman for the Maine Warden Service said in a news release Monday.
Game wardens responded to Smith Road at about 8 p.m. Sunday regarding a fatal all-terrain vehicle accident.
The boy was carrying a coil of rope. While riding the bike, the rope became entangled in the rear wheel, and the boy became entangled in the rope as well, said Cpl. John MacDonald.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS personnel, he said.
The teenager had been staying with friends.
The body was transported to Meader and Son Funeral Home in Rumford for examination by the state Medical Examiner's Office.
This case is being reviewed by the Franklin County District Attorney's Office and remains under investigation, MacDonald said.
At Monday night's meeting of the RSU 10 Board of Directors, Dirigo High School Principal Michael Poulin did not give the boy's name, but told the board that he was a Dirigo High School student and had siblings who also attend district schools.
He said the school crisis team has been notified and will report to the school when needed.
“Crisis teams will be available for support. We’ll get through this, for our students, staff and families,” said Poulin.
