Pantries taking inventory
PERU- Food pantries and other assistance groups met last week with Good Shephard Food Bank at the Servant's Heart pantry to discuss possible delivery to pantries throughout the area.
Currently, each individual pantry has a volunteer who travels to Lewiston to pick up the items from GSFP. The new goal is to eliminate the need for that volunteer to be away from the pantry spending their own gas money and taking away from their time they could better spend in the pantry.
GSFP has assigned each pantry to begin figuring out how much they spend on food, what costs they incur by having someone traveling to the warehouse among other specifics. With this assignment complete, GSFP would like to see the towns in which the pantries are located, begin supporting a delivery by GSFP.
"Good Shephard has asked us to begin getting all of these details together so that we can all go to our towns and ask them for a $1500 donation to GSFP to offset their costs to deliver to us," noted Brenda Swan, director and volunteer of Servant's Heart. "I think this is great. Our volunteer spends a lot of time on the road traveling to Lewiston to get the best deals. It would be nice for her to not have to do that and spend more time here."
Within the next year, GSFP would like to begin delivering food to each pantry in Andover, Peru, and Dixfield.
