Peru approves municipal budget
PERU- Citizens overwhelmingly approved a $717,600 2013-14 budget last week with $59,048 in cuts being made over the 2012-13 amount, with the fire department, town office operations, municipal officers and general assistance taking a reduction in their budgets.
The town was faced with two elections this June; to find someone to fill the three-year selectman term, as well as finding someone to replace Kathy Hussey as the town secretary.
Jim Pulsifer won the selectman seat with 125 votes over Ed Ferland’s 98 and Kurt Rowley’s 96; while Angela Barkhouse won the secretary position over Valerie Taylor with 179 votes.
Barkhouse takes the secretary’s position of 20 hours a week after citizens voted last June to change the appointed position to an elected one.
Kathy Hussey held the position since November of 2000.
The selectboard, now comprised of Larry Snowman, Danny Wing, Laurieann Milligan, Lee Merrill and Jim Pulsifer will now meet with Barkhouse to set a specific agenda as to how she will be trained to town affairs, who will be in charge of training her and how many hours of training she will receive.
“At this point selectmen have not met with Angela,” stated Town Clerk Vera Parent. “But they will be the ones to decide how things will be handled from here.”
The town selectmen meet every Monday evening at 6 p.m. in the town office.
