Junkyard may occupy former mill
PERU- Selectmen and members of the planning board met last week to discuss the permit request they received from JC Demolition & Recycling of Poland to turn the former Diamond Match mill into a junkyard and recycling center.
Chairman of the Board, Tim Holland, noted, “Our major concern is the matter of the fluids being drained from the vehicles. What impact will it have environmentally? We’re looking at the proximity of the river, wells in the area and how the fluids will be disposed of.”
Chairman Holland stated that JC Demolition indicated they will use the existing foundations from the former buildings to place tanks, in which, the fluids will be stored until transported off the property.
JC Demolition would have to follow all Department of Environmental Protection guidelines and the Peru code enforcement officer would be in charge of following up and inspecting the site periodically.
There will be a public hearing on the topic Wednesday, June 20, beginning at 6 P.M. at the Peru Town Office.
