Friends of PES move forward
PERU- The Friends of Peru Elementary, after a long journey to gain a lease agreement of the former elementary school, are moving forward with their plans to create a recreation center for the small town.
The group is planning their first official open house and fundraising pancake breakfast for January 21, complete with an archival slide show and information pertaining to the years it's been in operation.
The FPES are currently looking for volunteers who would like to help out during the breakfast.
According to president of the group, Nick Waugh, they have had maintenance performed on the furnace, so that it's running in tip-top shape, the lease agreement is still being finalized with the town selectmen and they have purchased their liability insurance, which is roughly $1250 and their share of the town liability policy is $900.
“We're excited to get things moving,” noted Waugh. “River Valley Zumba is back in the building holding classes and we're hopeful that once the lease agreement is finalized, we'll get the others back, too.”
The PES are currently applying for 501 c(3) (non-profit) status and upon gaining that stature, they will be able to formally submit the application for the $10,000 Gibson Grant the town turned down in September.
“It's been a long road,” noted Waugh. “But, we're a positive group and we're going to make this work.”
The group is also working on putting together a fun, family-friendly sliding party for February vacation.
If anyone is interested in becoming a member of Friends of Peru Elementary or would like to volunteer their time during the upcoming pancake breakfast, please call Nick Waugh at 562-7287.
