Rec fund in safe keeping
PERU- The chair of the volunteer recreation committee board, Tim Holland, was contacted last week in regards to the inquiry by the board of selectmen of the funds that were donated for the construction of bathrooms near the ball fields on town office property.
Holland stated that the fund has a present balance of $3909.30, with the majority of funds collected coming from cash donations and a bottle drive.
“That has been the balance for a while now and it will remain that way until we have enough funds for the building,” stated Holland, adding, “And we have enough volunteers on the committee to move forward.”
Over the past couple of weeks, selectmen were trying to reach Holland for account balances after being requested for that information by townspeople.
“We have an obligation to the town to get that information,” stated Chairman of the Board, Jim Pulsifer.
During last week’s meeting, Vice Chairman of the Board, Laurieann Milligan, stated, “Since it’s a volunteer committee, not governed by the board of selectmen or the town, it’s a gray area as to what information we can ask of them from their financial statement. We can ask specifics about that particular fund, but not the entire committee checking account.”
Holland was one of four selectmen recalled this past spring after citizens passed an ordinance allowing them to recall town officials. Holland still serves on the recreation committee, where he has for the past 20-plus years, maintaining ball fields, coaching summer rec teams and serving as an occasional umpire, all on his own time.
