Sewer rates to rise

DIXFIELD- Town Auditor, Ron Smith of RHR Smith & Co., attended last week’s selectmen’s meeting to applaud the town on keeping a healthy general fund, but to also inform them that they need to do something about their sewer rates.

“You need a healthy general fund balance and need to be prepared financially. You are doing a great job at that end. But, it’s been a long time since your sewer rates had an increase. You’ve been charging a flat $50 per unit rate and you’re losing money. Even if you make a 50 percent increase in rates right now, you’re still a couple years out to stop the downward spiral that you’re in.”

Selectmen questioned why the rates were never discussed previously. Smith noted, “I’m looking at a whole new board. It was discussed a few years ago, but none of you were part of that board.”

Selectmen agreed to hold a public hearing on September 17 from 5 to 6 p.m. in the Dirigo High School Community Room for citizens to learn more about the sewer rate increase.
