Healthy hearts in training
ANDOVER- For the second year of three, the Annual Healthy Hearts 5k will host their youngest participants from the Andover Elementary School. This year’s community event is scheduled for Sunday, May 19.
More than half of the Andover Elementary School students have signed up for the race, along with their parents and siblings, and have been training with a River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition volunteer. They will continue to train weekly until the week before the race.
Schools throughout the River Valley have the opportunity to form teams with each child registering their family (of up to four), for only $10.
“Three years ago our goal was to just get people out and active, and to help them become more aware of heart health,” stated Sandy Witas, co-organizer of the RVHCC event. “We’re so excited to have made such an impact on that goal, and now we’re reaching out to the community as a whole for their continued support.”
New this year, is the lead sponsorship provided by Bangor Savings Bank. They have stepped up to provide funding for the new, modern tech t-shirt, as well as other promotional items that will be handed out on the day of the race.
Anyone interested in sponsoring this community event is urged to contact Sandy Witas at 364-7408 or emailing her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you would like to participate, there are many different ways to do so. You can log on to www.active.com and pre-register for only $20, or stop by the RVHCC office at 94 River Street in Rumford. If you have a student in a local elementary school, your family of four can register in-person at the RVHCC office for only $10. Race day registration will be $25.
This year’s funds will benefit the Maine Harvest for Hunger Program.
