Did you know that approximately 200,000 people in our state are food insecure? More than 61,000 of them are children. Maine ranks second in New England and 18th in the nation for adult food insecurity and first and 22nd for child food insecurity. This means that one of every four children in our state is going hungry on a daily basis.
The Maine Harvest for Hunger Program hopes to help that number decline by teaching people how to grow their own food, help them to begin participating in community gardens, teach people how to eat healthier foods, and to seek out those who are able to volunteer time or goods.
Here are a few ways you can help feed Maine’s hungry:
Grow extra food in your garden; if you have the space, plant a row for the hungry and let your children help. They’ll learn how to help, too.
Harvest extra crops from farmer’s fields
Collect and distribute food donations from your local farmer’s market
Educate yourself and other about food insecurity in Maine
Farmers can support local gleaning efforts either in the field or at a farmer’s market
Employers, civic organizations and schools can engage your employees, members and students in any of these activities.
