Let a healthy heart guide you May 15
The 1st Annual Healthy Hearts 5K will take place on May 15 in Rumford.
RUMFORD- It's that time of year when we start to see more and more people getting out and moving while enjoying the beautiful sunshine. Some of them walking and even running. Why? They're training for the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition's first annual Healthy Hearts 5K Run/Walk that is slated for May 15 right here in town. All proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association.
RVHCC decided to commence their winter program of Walk 100 Miles in 100 Days with a health-based activity for all ages to participate.
The morning will kick off with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. Anyone can register for only $20 before race day, with race day registration costing $25. The first 100 registrants will receive a free event t-shirt.
During the morning of the race there are various heart-healthy activities planned.
Karen Mann of River Valley Zumba will lead participants in pre-race stretches and warm ups, Med-Care Ambulance will be on hand providing free EKG heart assessments and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) demos. There will also be a free seedling, ready to planted in your favorite garden spot, handed out while supplies last.
While all the sponsors and supporters are helping to make this a true community event; the Mountain Valley Peer Helpers, will also be on site holding a non-perishable food drive from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Post-race refuel will consist of pizza, fruits and veggies, all being provided by Pizza Hut and Rumford Community Home.
The 3.1-mile/5-kilometer event will take place through the streets of Rumford. Individuals, families, clubs and businesses interested in walking or running are asked to visit http://www.active.com/running/rumford-me/healthy-hearts-5k-runwalk-2011 or stop by the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition office at 94 River St. for an entry form.
Participants are encouraged to build teams and wear a unified color, bring your strollers and instill a life-long sense of fitness and health in your youngsters.
The funds raised will benefit the American Heart Association in an effort to support projects like putting up-to-the-minute research into doctors' hands so they can better prevent and treat heart disease among patients. Will help fund groundbreaking pediatric heart and stroke research. About 36,000 babies are born with heart defects each year. Research is the key to saving babies’ lives.
And, last but not least, getting life-saving information to those who need it most. Information that can save a life; like how to eat better, how to recognize the warning signs of heart attack, and how to talk to a doctor about critical health choices.
Sponsors for this event include: Irving Forest Products, Arsenic & Lace Antiques, Brushmarx, Pizza Hut, Rumford Community Home, SmartCare, Davis Florist, Carrabassett Spring Water, Chisholm Ski Club, Sun Journal, Rumford Falls Times, Road ID, River Valley IT, River Valley Chamber of Commerce, Med-Care Ambulance, River Valley Zumba, River Valley Chiropractic, Mountain Valley Peer Helpers, Mexico Explorers, Civil Air Patrol, Rumford Police Department and Photos by Greg Viger.
