RUMFORD -- The GRCC Ronald Ashworth Memorial Fund has been established.
The fund is tasked with supporting the development of innovative youth programs that seek to develop creative, intellectual, physical and emotional skills and abilities in the young people that live in the greater Rumford community.
A direct focus of the fund will be the Greater Rumford Community Center. Steve Casey of the GRCC said the fund was created by people who knew Ashworth and the valued he had which were in keeping with the mission of the GRCC.
Ashworth, who died on Oct. 27, 2010, served as the executive director of the GRCC from 1968 to 1977. He also ran the gymnastic program for a number of years. From 1981 to 1999, Rev. Ashworth was the pastor of the Mexico Congregational Church in Mexico.
He also served as chairman of the Board for Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, as well as chairman of the Farrington Morton Cemetery Association. He served on the board of the Rumford Community Hospital, was also a member of Rotary, Lion’s Club of Bath, Red Cross, Maine Parks and Recreation, GRAMPS, Pilgrim Lodge, where he served as dean for 10 years, and YMCA Leadership School staff.
Bob Anderson, longtime GRCC program director, noted that Ashworth helped out whereever needed, but most importantly, took time out to talk to people.
"He talked to kids who normally can't be reached. He reached them," he noted.
Casey said that by mid-May, a Facebook page called "GRCC Ron Ashworth Memorial Fund" will be established. He said they are working to establish 501C3 status to make donations tax deductible.
Serving on the committee to oversee the fund will be Roland Arsenault, Louise Thibodeau, Arthur Meader, Dr. Steve Garbarini and Wayne Gallant.
Anyone wishing to support this effort can send a contribution to "GRCC Ron Ashworth Memorial Fund" in care of Kaynor & Kreckel, 95 Congress St., Rumford, ME 04276.
