PO Jeff Dow may be a Cryptologic Technician but he does have to do manual labor as well. He uses a needle gun (rust buster) in his right hand. Thank you for serving our country!
Jeffery Dow, a member of the Mountain Valley High School Class of 2006, is on active duty in the U.S. Navy. He has reached the rank of Petty Officer Second Class (Surface Warfare).
According to PO Dow, he is a “Navy Cryptologic Technician - Collections (CTRs), who provides indications and warnings (I&W) to Tactical, Operational, and Strategic decisions makers by producing time-sensitive intelligence reporting for national, fleet, and component level warfare commanders. They maintain situational awareness and an accurate battle space picture for embarked combatants in support of the Navy's global force projection capability.”
For most civilians that’s a mouthful. Cryptology is the study of codes – writing and solving them. So PO Dow uses cryptology to provide information to officers about what’s happening at various levels both on the sea and on land.
PO Dow joined the Navy to learn more about himself. He said, “I don't know if it was a motivation (to enlist) so much as it was uncertainty. I was unclear of what I wanted to do with my life. A recruiter called, asked me what I liked to do, and what my goals were, then he just showed me how the Navy could help me achieve them. I took the ASVAB, scored pretty high, and selected a job I thought was interesting.”
Since his first enlistment didn’t provide all he was searching for, he re-enlisted.
PO Dow explained, “I then re-enlisted in 2010 for six more years because I wasn't sure if there was anything else outside of the Navy that I wanted to do. I also joined to see the world, and had only seen Hawaii for three years. So I wanted to go to a ship, and I'm glad I did. I've now been to 14 different countries throughout Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean!”
During his time in the Navy, he has been stationed in Oahu, HI; Norfolk, VA; San Angelo, TX; and Tampa, FL. He served on board the USS Anzio.
He described how important a support network is at home.
“Life in the military is different,” he said. “Sometimes we go through rough times, but it's those people back home and the family that supports you that makes all the difference. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for close contact with friends and family. So thank you to all of you who have supported me.”
It’s that close support that will help him continue to serve our country.
Asked how the home team can support him, PO Dow explained, “Although I'm a very independent person, I still need that contact. Add me on Facebook or ask family members how to reach me. I love talking to people and I may be busy, but I always find the time to respond.”
He is “Jeff PO Dow” on Facebook – the one who lives in Melbourne, FL.
PO Dow is the son of Pamela Dow of Rumford and Steve Dow of Melbourne, FL. His younger sister, Tiffany Petrie, and brother, Jeremy Dow, live in Rumford.
