This is the fourth in a series about graduates from Mountain Valley High School who are serving our country in the military.
Cadet Kevin Sarle has combined military service with college. He is on a contract with the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and earning a commercial aviation degree at the University of North Dakota. He graduated from Mountain Valley High School in 2010.
For Cdt Sarle, his service is a dream come true.
He said, “I have always wanted to pursue a career in the armed forces. ROTC gave me the ability to attend college and earn a degree while also training to become a soldier in the U.S. Army.”
In addition to the work that comes with earning a college degree, Cdt Sarle has added responsibilities. He explained, “As an upcoming senior, I will be responsible for planning training events and conducting training for the underclassman in the ROTC program.”
Cdt Sarle continued, “I recently returned from a month-long training event at Fort Lewis, Washington called the Leadership Development and Assessment Course (LDAC). Cadets attend LDAC between their junior and senior year where they are evaluated on their abilities to lead other cadets from all over the country. We were also trained and assessed on things like first aid, rappelling, day and night land navigation, field craft and much more.”
In his “spare time,” he is learning to fly helicopters.
“I am also part of the Helicopter Flight Training Program, a one of a kind program only offered through the University of North Dakota ROTC Battalion,” Cdt Sarle said. “The program is a scholarship that covers civilian helicopter flight training and gives cadets a head start on their future Army Aviation career.”
Asked what additional information he wanted the folks back home to know, Cdt Sarle said, “Army ROTC is a great program for those who want to serve their country and become a leader in our armed forces. As a cadet in Army ROTC, I receive full tuition benefits and a monthly stipend throughout my time at college. Upon graduating, I will be commissioned as a second lieutenant (2LT) in the U.S. Army, hopefully in the aviation branch.”
Like most members of the military, Cdt Sarle realizes that community support is critical.
He explained, “The only support I look for is support of the men and women, past and present, who have served in the armed forces.”
Cdt Sarle is the son of Melinda and Richard Sarle, Jr. of Rumford. He has two brothers.
Richard Sarle III is currently stationed at Andrews Air Force Base in the US Navy. Benjamin Sarle lives in Rumford, is working on his master’s degree in Public Health at University of New England and is a volunteer firefighter in Mexico.
