Sgt. Bruns and his fellow squad members get ready to conduct training in door-to-door building clearing operations.
This is the fifth in a series about graduates from Mountain Valley High School who are serving our country in the military.
Sergeant Joseph Bruns is the fifth generation in his family to serve in the military. He credits all of his fathers and grandfathers with providing the motivation to join.
Sgt. Bruns explained, “I wanted to serve from a very young age. My fathers before me had served, some of them in major historic battles throughout the world which inspired me to enlist.”
Sgt. Bruns carries on the family tradition in the Army National Guard where he is a Blackhawk helicopter mechanic and flight crew chief.
After graduating from Mountain Valley High School in 2008, Sgt Bruns was stationed for training at Ft. Knox, KY and Ft. Eustis, VA. He received pre-deployment training at Ft. Hood, TX; and Ft. Bliss, TX. Currently his unit is stationed out of Bangor. But he has also seen overseas duty.
“In 2012, my unit was activated to spend almost a year In Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom,” Sgt. Bruns recalled.
“While in Kuwait, I was part of a forward support team that was sent to Jordan in support of Operation Eager Lion.”
Operation Eager Lion is a multinational training exercised hosted by Jordan. According to the Army News Service, it is “designed to strengthen military-to-military partnerships and enhance security and stability in the region.”
Sgt. Bruns credits his support network at home with getting him through his deployment.
He said, “People that are back home while loved ones are gone should know that every bit of support and encouragement help.
Some days are worse than others and its good to know you have a good support system behind you.”
Sgt. Bruns also encourages community member help, “There are all kinds of ways to support troops overseas and they don't necessarily have to be loved ones. If you would like to support a service member or entire unit, there are plenty of resources available online to do so.”
Dad Chris Bruns, MomTerri Ellis and Step-dad Mark Glover form the support team for their son, Sgt. Bruns.
