RUMFORD -- Late last year, McKennel's Animal Adoption Agency and Aubuchon Hardware began a project to house a kitten or cat at the Falmouth Street store in the hopes it would help these animals find homes.
It has been a resounding success. Elly Taylor of Aubuchon, who took a couple of minutes to play with Spunky, a male of eight months, said that since December, all six of the previous cats housed here have been adopted, including two in Andover and another in Mexico.
"We have people who walk into the store just to say 'hi' to the cats, not even to shop," she noted.
Elly said past practice has been to let the cat out of the cage after store hours to run around, then put back in its cage when the store opens.
She said the first cat they had here was especially popular because it captured two mice it found around the store.
However, at the present time, Elly said they can't let Spunky out of the cage because they now have some chickens which are starting to get bigger.
She said this kind of a natural partnership because the store also sells pet supplies. To adopt this cat or to adopt another pet, call McKennel's at 364-7176.
