Tribute paid to jr. firefighter
DIXFIELD -- On Friday morning, Dixfield Fire Chief Scott Dennett and Deputy Chief Chris Moretto marched solemnly alongside a Dixfield Fire Co. ladder truck draped in black cloth that escorted Danielle "Dani" Ranger's ashes up Weld Street as part of her funeral procession.
Dani's firefighter helmet was sitting on the front of the ladder truck, whick was followed by about 50 members of fire, EMS and police departments who participated in the march from the Dixfield Fire Station to the Dirigo High School gymnasium for a memorial service, where many of the attendees wore purple or orange, two of Dani's favorite colors.
A LifeFlight of Maine helicopter hovered above the high school until the ladder truck reached its destination.
Ranger, 16, a junior at Dirigo High School, died on Oct. 16 from injuries sustained in a car crash the night before in Peru. She served as a junior firefighter for the Dixfield Fire Co. and was a member of the Western Foothills Junior Firefighter Program.
Dani's helmet was presented to her mother during the funeral service.
The night before, a candlelight vigil was held for Dani at the high school, attended by hundreds of students, staff and community members, joining her family at the remembrance.
Meanwhile, a parking spot at Dirigo High School was turned into a memorial for Dani.
