Andover voters opt to keep school open
ANDOVER -- Residents Thursday voted overwhelmingly to keep the Andover Elementary School open for another year.
Earlier, this month, RSU 44 board voted 13-3 to close the school and transport students to Crescent Park School in Bethel starting in September. The closure would save $214,600.
A group of Andover residents formed Save/Recreate Andover Elementary School to mobilize community support.
Andover voters were presented with a ballot question that asked if residents were in favor of the SAD 44 board's decision to close the school at the end of this school year. When the ballots at the town hall were tabulated, the answer was "no" by a resounding 229 to 56.
The school is projected to have 25 students in grades kindergarten to five next fall. Two of the school's three teachers retired this month.
The next challenge for the town will be how to raise the estimated $214,600 to operate the school for the coming year.
