Free summer food for kids
RUMFORD – With school vacation upon us, it’s time to think about keeping children eating healthy while school is out. RSU 10 will begin providing free meals to children in the River Valley during the summer.
This summer, meals will be served at Rumford Elementary School from Tuesday through Friday for the month of July, beginning on July 5. Breakfast will begin each morning at 8:30 a.m. and lunch will be served beginning at 11:30 a.m. There are no income requirements or advanced registration. Any child under the age of 18 may come to eat. For more information, contact Jeanne LaPointe 364-8155, ext. 4129.
A strong partnership between RSU 10, River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition, and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension has been forged to provide a strong presence of food grown in Maine on the menu. Local growers who are interested in getting their crops into the program can use the contact information listed above.
Each year, The U.S. Department of Agriculture partners with local organizations like RSU 10 to provide free meals to children when school is out for the summer. For more information about the national Summer Food Service Program, visit http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/summer.
