Madigan awarded year contract
MEXICO -- Following an executive session on Aug. 8, the Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to approve another one-year contract with Town Manager John Madigan.
Board Chairman Richie Philbrick said the board waited until after townspeople approved the municipal budget to approve the contract, which includes the same 3 percent salary increase that was given to the other town employees. With that, Madigan's salary of $61,186,94 will move to $63,029.41 for the 2013-14 fiscal year.
Contracts with Madigan have continued in the one-year term. "We've been doing one year at a time. He felt comfortable with that. That way, there's no payouts," noted Philbrick.
Talking about reasons to continue with Madigan, Philbrick said, "He cares about the town and is very frugal."
He said Madigan did a "heck of a job" in getting a Community Development Block Grant and fought for the town in the recent budget issue about state revenue sharing.
Philbrick noted that Madigan is also the head of the public works department, which he does without additional pay.
