Ross winner of ice out contest

ROXBURY -- Annette Ross of Rumford is the winner of the sixth annual Rumford Falls Times' Ice Out Contest.

According to Dennis Daniel of Ellis Pond Variety, a Game Warden proclaimed the official time of ice out on Roxbury Pond was 2:30 p.m. on March 26, about a month earlier than the April 27 ice out last year.

Ross prediction of March 30 was the only prediction submitted for the month of March. For her astuteness, she win a prize package from our sponsors includes a $20 gift certificate from Mexico One Stop, an oil change and tire rotation at Dan's Automotive, a pizza deal at Mountain Valley Variety, and a three-month subscription to the Rumford Falls Times.

Daniel, who also held a contest at his store, said the winner there was Dennis Waugh of Roxbury, who predicted the correct day.

Daniel said this year's ice out is the earliest ever at Roxbury Pond, at least since 1978 when his records began. The previous early ice out was April 3, 2010. The latest was May 8 in 1978.
