Scottish performers at Skye

REGION -- New England Celtic Arts will host award winning Scottish performers Chris Stout and Catriona McKay for several shows in Maine. At Skye Theatre in So. Carthage on Wednesday, Dec. 5; and at UCCPA in Unity on Thursday, Dec. 6. Curtain at Skye is 7 p.m. and at UCCPA is 7:30 p.m.

Having gigged, explored and sculpted their musical identities together for 15 years now, Chris Stout (Shetland Fiddle) and Catriona McKay (Scottish Harp) continue to evolve and create a sound and style “operating at a rarefied level of expertise” (The Herald). They recorded their first duo cd “Laebrack” in 2005 and have been part of many other projects together over the years as trustworthy collaborators.

Chris Stout is a hugely dynamic and charismatic fiddle player, composer and producer from Fair Isle in the Shetland Islands. His diverse background, deeply rooted in both traditional and classical styles, has brought him to collaborate with musicians across the globe. Born and brought up in the Shetland Islands, Chris Stout has, over the last few years, become nationally and internationally recognised as one of the most exciting and dynamic fiddle players and composers of his generation.

Whether as a solo artist, a member of Fiddlers Bid, leading his own quintet or as one half of his duo with long time musical associate Catriona McKay, Chris continues to innovate within traditional and contemporary musical circles, delivering performances which excite and inspire audiences all over the world.

Catriona McKay is a diverse musician who pushes one of Scotland’s traditional instruments - the Scottish harp, to its limits. Through her composition and performing worldwide she is widely recognized for her unique style, inventiveness and daring rhythmic use of the Scottish harp.

A special note: Andrew Harris with the Portland Stage Co. will be presenting "A Child's Christmas in Wales" at the Skye Theatre performance on Wednesday, Dec. 5 in So. Carthage.
