Walk to End Domestic Violence
RUMFORD -- At 9 a.m. this Saturday on the Hosmer walking trail, people are encouraged to show support in the ongoing effort to stop domestic violence.
The Oxford County Violence Task Force has been sponsoring community events in this, Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Regarding the walk, to be held rain or shine, Rumford Police Chief Stacy Carter said, "We're trying to bring community awareness. We're looking for people to show support, and learn what's available for services."
He said there will be several stations set up along the half-mile walk with resources and information for community members. These group will include Safe Voices and REACH. The theme for the walk is "Every Step Matters."
And this will also be a poker walk – each vendor will pass out a playing card and the person with the best hand an the end of the walk will win a basket from the Basket Lady.
"Domestic violence is prevalent here. We handle a lot of calls," noted Carter. "In August, we had fewer incidents. I don't why. There are times we have two or three calls a week. For the fiscal year, domestic violence calls are up."
