300 attend skating party

RUMFORD -- With free food and toys, terrific ice and favorable weather, more than 300 people of all ages made the trip to the ice skating facility on the DARE field Saturday for an Old Fashioned Family Fun Day.

Sponsored by the Rumford Parks Department, the event was held in appreciation for the public making this a banner year for the ice skating facility.

John Martin of the Rumford Parks Commission noted that at the midway point of the late afternoon event, gone were 250 hot dogs and 15 gallons of hot chocolate. He noted that they expected a lot of kids for the event, but there were a lot of adults making it here for the festivities.

As the sun went down and temperatures turned cooler, a larger group of people gathered around the bon fire for the warmth and good conversation.

Martin said they've been averaging 60 or more people during the weekends. "People have been skating when it's been cold and I've seen one person skating alone between 10 to 12 at night."
