Ice out contest winner
RIVER VALLEY -- Gerald Deanis, who lives at Roxbury Pond, is the winner of the fifth annual Rumford Falls Times' Ice Out Contest.
Dennis Daniel, owner of Ellis Pond Variety, said he was informed by a Game Warden that the official ice out for Roxbury Pond was 5:35 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27.
"Just the Saturday before, 70 percent of the pond was covered with ice," he noted, adding that Wednesday was when temperatures shot up into the seventies.
For being the ice out winner, Gerald wins a prize package from our sponsors that includes gift certificates to Mexico One Stop, an oil change and tire rotation at Dan's Automotive, a one-year subscription to an outdoor magazine called the Northwood's Journal, and a three-month subscription to the Rumford Falls Times.
The Rumford Falls Times thanks everyone for their entries, as well as for contributing canned good(s), non-perishable food item(s) or pet food to go to to a local food pantry and to McKennel's Animal Shelter, respectively.
Records of the ice out at Roxbury Pond have been kept at least since 1978, noted Daniel. He said the average ice out has been between April 16-21. Last year's ice out was April 3, with Helen Deanis of Roxbury Pond correctly guessing the day.
Daniel said the earliest recorded ice out was April 6 on 2006-07. The latest was May 8 in 1978.
