RUMFORD -- With family and friends present, James Nicols and his brother, Billy were honored by the Board of Selectmen Thursday as the town's Citizens of the Year.
Their company, Nicols Bros. Logging, located in the Rumford Industrial Park, lent the town temporary use of their company's logging bridge to span Bean Brook. They voluntarily installed it after flooding from Tropical Storm Irene destroyed the Swain Road bridge Aug. 28 and 29, 2011.
Town Manager Carlo Puiia said installing the bridge, used from Sept. 10 until the second week in January, "put the whole town at ease."
As a result, the town bought the necessary time to do a proper replacement, getting the job engineered and done right.
"We owe a great deal of gratitude to Nicols Brothers Logging, and we want to recognize Jim and Billy Nicols tonight as our Citizens of the Year," said Puiia.
In accepting the award, Jim said, "We just did it out of sake of seeing the need. I also want to publicly thank the people who work for us. A lot of times what we do doesn't always get seen around town. We have 30-something employees. I know quite a few of them were down there that day, so I think this is a recognition of our company also."
"As brothers, with our family living close by, I'd like to thank my mother and father for showing us the way at a young age," he noted.
As recognition for the employees of Nicols Brothers Logging, Puiia also presented the brothers with a plaque for their office that reads, "The Town of Rumford Good Samaritan Award presented to Nicols Brothers for unselfishly helping others, Sept. 10, 2011."
In accepting the plaque, Jim Nicols also thanked the Rumford Public Works, many of whom were working to help with the installment of the temporary bridge.
