Ethelyn Grace (Goodridge) Horne
BATTLEBORO, VT -- Ethelyn Grace (Goodridge) Horne, 87, of Putney, VT, died on February 18, 2011 at Pine Heights Nursing Home in Brattleboro, VT.
Born on June 8, 1923 in Mexico, she was the daughter of Harry Goodridge and Elfreda (Campbell) Goodridge Nicknamed "Dolly," she graduated from Mexico High School in 1940
She married Lawrence Wesley Horne, also from Mexico in 1940. They then moved to Schenectady, NY as a very young couple, back to Miane until the late '40's. then on to Manchester, CT to find work. From there, the moved to Greenfield, MA in the mid '50's, where they opened their retail shoe store. They remained in Greenfield until 1978 when they moved to Port St. Lucie, FL. This was her home until 2007 when she moved back north to be with her daughter, Tina.
Her work history began in 1937 when she cleaned house for a favorite teacher, and then cooked and cleaned for her mother's nursing home business. She was a finish tool grinder for Pratt Whitney Aircraft in Connecticut, then an owner of a retail family shoe store with her husband, working many hours to build that business.
All the while she simultaneously kept and maintained her family's home. After being widowed in 1985, she went back into retail working for the JC Penney Co. at the Treasure Coast Mall in Jensen Beach, FL. She worked until age 72!
She was a very talented interior decorator and seamstress. A very shy woman, she only worked at art and painting projects with warm support and encouragement from her activities group in her elderly years.
Survivors are her daughters, Tina Horne of Putney, VT and Dyanne King of Eureka, MT; grandchildren, Teri M. Canup of Yakima, WA, Amy Calderon of Stuart, FL, Casey Hoffman of Charlemont, MA, Alicia Hoffman of Greenfield, MA and Hunter Siggins of Putney, VT; great-grandchildren, Breanna and Danielle Canup of Yakima, WA, Makayla Wood of Greenfield, MA, Casey Hoffman II of Charlemont, MA and Jessie, Angelice and Joseph Calderon of Stuart, FL.
She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Wesley Horne; a son, Lawrence Earl Horne; a sister, Kathleen Faye McBean; two brothers, Harry and Charles Goodridge; and grandson, Robert Van Valkenburg.
A celebration and memorial of Grace's life shall be held at the Kiwanis Shelter within Living Memorial Park in Brattleboro, VT on August 7, 2011 at 10 a.m. A warm welcome to all who'd like to join us. For more information, contact Tina Horne.
