Barbara “Bobbie” Stewart Bentley
VIRGINIA -- Barbara “Bobbie” Stewart Bentley, 84, went home to The Lord on April 16, 2013.
Bobbie was born August 11, 1928 in Rumford. She graduated from Rumford’s Stephens High School in 1946 and then attended the University of Maine at Orono.
After graduation in 1950, she moved to New York City where she worked in local theatre and later as an airline stewardess with Capitol Airlines.
In 1956, Bobbie and Bill Bentley, a 1953 graduate of the US Naval Academy, were married in Norfolk, VA and after many years of Navy life, in 1979, they settled in Virginia Beach. Since 1967, they have also maintained a family “camp” on Birches Beach Road on Mooselookmeguntic Lake.
In retirement, she enjoyed travel and Elderhostels, especially Intergenerational Elderhostels with her grandchildren, but most of all, Bobbie cherished her time with family and her role as “Camp Mom.” She loved being at camp on Mooselook, being with our Maine friends, enjoying walks on Birches Beach Road, and the lake life.
Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, Clinton and Lena Stewart of Rumford.
She is survived by her husband, Capt. William “Bill” Cooke Bentley, USN (ret.); her daughter, Lisa B. Chud and husband, Samuel J. Chud of Newtown, PA; two sons, William (Bud) Bentley and his wife, Kathie Currier-Bentley of Yardley, PA, and David S. Bentley of Virginia Beach, VA; and eight loving grandchildren: Jordan, Jared, Justin, Joshua and Lindsay Chud, all of Newtown, PA, and Chelsea, Cameron and Tucker Bentley, all of Yardley, PA.
A memorial service was held at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach on April 20. An internment will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy later this spring.
