RUMFORD -- Charles D. Chappell, Jr. 63, of Wilton, died on May, 22, 2012 at the Rumford Hospital after a courageous battle with ALS.

He was born May 21, 1949 in Watseka, IL, a son of Charles D. and Martha Sanders Chappell Sr.

On May 22, 1976, he married Linda Denney and they raised two daughters. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served in the Vietnam Conflict. He was self-employed as a carpenter and truck driver. He had a favorite pet, a Pomeranian named Bayley.

Charlie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was saved on August 25, 2005 and has gone to heaven to be with Christ the Lord.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linda of Wilton; daughter, Jen Speranza and her husband, James of Dixfield; three daughters, Carla Murphy and her husband, Kevin of Dixfield, Julie Black and her husband, Joe of Wilton, and Corinna Latarte of Mexico; an adopted son, Frank Burgess of Mexico; eight grandchildren, Mariah, Bethany, Britney, Miley, Jacob, Owen, Cheyenne and Nathan; one great-granddaughter, Cheyenne; three sisters; three brothers; and a cousin, Arthur Chappell.

He was predeceased by his parents; a brother; and an uncle.

The family would like to thank the hospice unit at Rumford Hospital and Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice for making Charlie’s last days as comfortable as they could.

Public memorial services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday from the Faith Baptist Church, 574 Auburn Rd., Peru. The family will host a potluck celebration following services from 2-5 p.m. at the Swasey-Torrey American Legion Post in Dixfield. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be considered to the ALS Foundation, 27001 Agoura Road, Suite 250, Calabasas Hills, CA 91301.
