Edward J. DesRoches
FORT MYERS, FL -- Edward J. DesRoches, 89, of Fort Myers, FL, passed away on July 17, 2013 following a long period of declining health.
He was born in Rumford to Edward DesRoches and Emeline (Gallant) DesRoches Theriault Richard on January 13, 1924. He attended local schools and graduated from Stephens High School in 1942.
He married Roselyn (Rody) Falkingham in 1947 and together they raised a family of six children. Ed served in World War II in the Pacific Theater in the 544th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment. He was awarded a Bronze Medal for his service in the Philippine Liberation.
Edward was self-employed as an electrician in the Rumford area for a few years when he accepted a job with RCA at Brunswick Maine Naval Air Station, later transferring to another RCA facility in Duluth, Minnesota. The company had been awarded several government contracts during the “Cold War” period following World War II and Edward found himself travelling around the world to remote locations such as Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
In 1963, Edward and his family had an opportunity to move to Wiesbaden, Germany for a year. That one-year turned into 19 years. When the government took over the work being performed by RCA, Ed joined the ranks of the U.S. Civil Service, working for the US Air Force and ultimately, the National Security Agency, from which he retired at age 70 in 1994.
Ed took up running in his late forties to combat weight gain and it became his passion. He participated in numerous Volksmarches while in Germany and was able to qualify and run in the Boston Marathon in the mid 1970’s. When his body couldn’t take the pounding from running any longer, he switched to cycling 20 miles a day during the week and 50 miles on the weekends, a regimen he maintained until the age of 84.
He is survived by a brother, Paul Theriault of Cape Neddick; Edward’s bride of 65 years, Roselyn (Faulkingham) DesRoches; children, Edward B. DesRoches, Charlene Brogan, Elizabeth Thayer, Gary DesRoches, Pamela Kilborn and Peter DesRoches; grandchildren, Jonathan DesRoches, Marissa Martinez, Kathryn Brogan, Elizabeth Rahman, William Brogan, Megan Swanger, Mark Thayer, Spencer DesRoches, Bailey DesRoches and Chloe Kilborn; and several nieces and nephews.
Edward predeceased by his sisters, Sylvina Mahar, Ella Derra and Pauline Gordon; brothers, Victor DesRoches and Adrian Theriault.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 13, with Father Greg of Holy Savior, 126 Main Ave., Rumford, officiating. Memorial flowers may be sent to Holy Savior for the funeral service. Burial/interment will follow at the Holy Savior Cemetery near Swift River Park.
