Donald E. Haines
RUMFORD -- Donald E. Haines, 99, went to his Lord peacefully on March 23, 2011 at the Rumford Community Home. He was a resident of Harlow Hill Road in Mexico.
Born in Mexico on June 17, 1911, he was a son of Leon and Mertie (Davenport) Haines. He was a 1929 graduate of Mexico High School, where he excelled in track.
He worked for Oxford Paper Company in the Finishing Room for over 44 years until his retirement in 1973.
He was a member of the Mexico First Baptist Church where he began playing the organ at the age of 12, sharing the position with his mother, Mertie Haines. In due course, he became the church organist and he served for 85 years.
For many years, Don had been a guest at many area nursing homes, taking his musical talents to residents. He also taught and mentored a number of younger pianist and organists.
He attended many gem shows which he loved to spend time. He was proud of his turquoise and tourmaline collection which he wore often. Donald was known for his sense of humor and quick wit. He displayed love for his family by taking care of his mother until her passing. He also loved going to the Maine Coast in the summer, sometimes taking others with him and enjoying the Maine seafood.
In September of 2010, the Mexico Board of Selectmen named Don as Mexico’s Boston Gold Cane holder for being Mexico’s oldest resident. He was a member of the Greater Rumford Senior Citizen’s Club and was well known for his flower gardens.
Survivors include several cousins, close friends Dave and Marlene Gile, and his church family. He will be greatly missed by whose life he impacted. A special thank you to the Rumford Community Home and staff.
Funeral services will be held in the spring at the Mexico First Baptist Church at a day and time to be announced. Interment in the spring will be in the Baptist Cemetery in Mexico. Those who desire may contribute to the Mexico First Baptist Church, 20 Roxbury Rd., Mexico, ME 04257 in his memory.
