CANTON -- Howard Child, 73, died on September 5, 2013 in Canton as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident. He was a resident of Third Street in Dixfield and was formerly of Peru most of his life.
He was born in Peru on May 9, 1940 and was the son of Elmer and Iva (Andrews) Child. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He owned and operated Jeanne’s Bottle Depot in Mexico. He would go without so others would have more. Howard was a member of the Peru and Rumford American Legion. He served as County Commander and was a member of the 40 & 8 Club.
He was married in Peru on July 1, 1972 to Carrie Drury Donahue.
Survivors include three sons, Shane Child and his companion, Candy Bradbury of Mexico, Gordon Donahue of Tennessee, Richard Donahue and his wife, Denise of Dixfield two daughters, Elizabeth Donahue and companion David Gallant of Roxbury, Colleen Bernard and husband Daniel of Peru; three sisters Anna Hebert and her husband Harold of Peru, Hazel Vaughn of Mexico, Avis Orino of Mexico; a brother Robert Child of Turner; grandchildren Nicole Donahue, Richard M. Donahue, Nicholas Gallant, Casey Child, Olivia Child, Jared Bernard, Neil Priest, Travis Robbins. He was predeceased by his parents, four brothers and a son Matthew Donahue.
A celebration of life potluck dinner will be held at the Old Peru Elementary School from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday. Be prepared to share your favorite memories. Interment will be in the Franklin Cemetery in Peru.
