SCARBOROUGH -- Charles H. Horne, 79, of Deerwood Street, passed away on March 2, 2013 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice after suffering years from COPD and declining health.

He was born in Mexico on September 22, 1933, a son of Wirt T. and Isabelle (Kilbreth) Horne. He graduated from Mexico High School, Class of 1950.

On May 24, 1969, he married the, “love of his life,” Marlene J. Murphy.

Prior to retirement, Charles worked for Mechanical Services/Maine Controls.

He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed going to Red Sox games with his friends. Marlene and Charles were season ticket holders to the Portland Sea Dogs for 15 years.

Charles researched and wrote baseball crossword puzzle books and was in the process of completing his third book when he fell ill.

He was known for his wonderful sense of humor, quick wit, and easy going manner. He was a 50-year member of the King Hiram Lodge #57, AF&AM, in Dixfield.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years; a brother, John T. and his wife, Elizabeth Horne of Georgetown, TX; many nieces and nephews; and his kitty cat, Missy.

He is predeceased by two sisters, Joyce Keyo and Maxine Lyons.

Visitation will be held 1-2 p.m., Friday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Charles’ honor, may be made to the COPD Foundation, 2937 SW 27th Ave., Suite 302, Miami, FL, 33133.
