Robert R. Jalbert

RUMFORD -- Robert R. Jalbert, 77, died of cancer on April 1, 2011 at the Rumford Hospital. He was a resident of Davis Street in Rumford.

Born in Rumford on July 28, 1933, he was a son of Mary Gagnon and Benjamin Jalbert. He attended schools in Rumford and Caribou. He was a high school graduate.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951. He served aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Cabot No. CBL28during the Korean War, serving four years as a machinist mate.

He was married at St. Athanasius Church in Rumford on September 20, 1958 to Shirley Burns. Bob worked for Sampson’s Supermarket, Arbie’s Grocery, Oxford Paper Company, Ethel Paper Co., and Boise Cascade. He was a super calendar operator and later a heyster operator retiring in 1995.

A true family man, he loved his family and his home. He was a big Celtic and Patriots fan. He enjoyed conversing, and collecting elephant, duck and eagle statues.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Shirley Jalbert; a son, Michael A. Jalbert of Northfield, NH; a daughter, Brenda M. Curtis of West Peru; a grandson, Thomas C. Virgin and wife, Liza of West Peru; a granddaughter, Tiffany M. Virgin of West Peru; a sister, Margaret Marino of Portland; and four nieces and five nephews, all especially loved.

He was predeceased by his parents; grandparents; four sisters, Pheebe, Pauline, Aneita and Lydia; and three brothers, Lawrence, William and Benjamin.

Funeral services and interment will be private. Interment will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Those who desire may contribute to the Hospice House, 236 Stetson Rd., Auburn, ME 04201 in his memory.
