John Norman “Mac” MacDonald
RUMFORD -- John Norman “Mac” MacDonald, 80, of Prospect Avenue, died on May 12, 2012 at his residence following a long illness.
He was born in Rumford on October 4, 1931 a son of john William and Sarah Elizabeth (Curtis) MacDonald. John graduated from St. Athanasius School in 1947 and was a member of Stephens High School Class of 1951.
He served three years in the U.S. Army, stationed in Salzburg, Austria. Following his discharge from the service he was employed for two years with Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Hartford, CT.
He then went to work for Oxford Paper Company and was employed there for 40 years and was a member of the 25 and 40 year club.
John enjoyed pigeon racing and woodworking. He also loved playing the fiddle, accordion and harmonica; most recently he learned to text. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, and watching the Boston Red Sox.
Surviving are his children, Scott N. MacDonald and companion, Pamela Whittier of Canton, and Jeanne A MacDonald and fiancé, Jim Austin of Rumford; a sister, Arita Zitoli of Rumford; and three grandchildren, Colin “Popeye” MacDonald, Gage “Charlie” Welch, and Anthony “A-John” MacDonald.
He was predeceased by his parents and his wife Harriett (Boutin) MacDonald.
The family would like to thank the staff of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice for the care they gave to John, with a special thank you to Mary Lacroix for her extraordinary care.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at Parish of the Holy Savior. Interment will be in St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice, 15 Strawberry Ave., P.O. Box 819, Lewiston ME 04243-0819.
