William E. “Willie” Martin
RUMFORD -– William E. “Willie” Martin, 87, of Waldo Street, Rumford, died on September 10, 2012 at the Rumford Hospital.
He was born in Rumford on January 18, 1925, the son of Fidele and Phoebe (Poirier) Martin. He had attended Rumford schools.
During World War II, he served in the US Army with the 68th General Hospital.
Willie worked at Oxford, Ethyl and Boise Cascade Paper Company in Rumford until retirement after more than 36 years in 1987 as a General Helper in the Craft Mill.
He was a Communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior, St. Athanasius–St. John Church; Boise Cascade Paper Company 25 year Club; Napoleon Ouellette Post #24, American Legion; Robert Shand Post #1641, VFW; LeParesseux Snowshoe Club; Rumford Falls Aerie #1248, FOE.
He was married in Mexico on December 15, 1962 to Marie C. Turbide, who died in Rumford on September 6, 1999.
Survivors include step-daughter Elizabeth “Betsy” Chickering of Dixfield; many step grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and sister, Pearl Murphy of Rumford.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Freddie, Louis, Anthony, and Sylvio Martin.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Parish of the Holy Savior, St. Athanasius–St. John Church, 126 Maine Ave., Rumford. Interment will be at St. John Cemetery, Rumford.
