Pamela H. McGinley
HOMER, AK -- Pamela H. McGinley, 58, died in Homer, Alaska on June 4, 2011 after many brave years of struggle with diabetes and kidney failure.
She was born at Rumford Community Hospital on Feb. 26, 1953, the daughter of James and Madelyn McGinley (both now deceased) of Dixfield. She attended Dixfield schools and graduated from the Univ. of Maine at Gorham with a degree in elementary education.
Pam conducted her student teacher in the inner city of London, England. This may have sparked her interest in faraway places. She was attracted to Alaska's rugged lifestyle and explored jobs as a cab driver, fishing boat cook and finally found her niche in early childhood education for young Alaskans.
She served many years as a Head Start teacher, janitor, bus driver and home visitor on Kodiak Island and Homer, AK. The job as home visitor involved trips to the homes of children who lived too far from the Head Start Center for regular bus pickup.
Because of the severe weather and road conditions, she sometimes resported to using the Alaskan tow trucks or snowplows to ensure that she brought the ABC's, 123's and preschool crafts to children and basic education in health, nutrition and child development to parents who lived down snowy, isolated roads.
Pam was a warm and devoted teacher. She introduced many youngsters to learning in a spirited and joyous manner. Learned about Baby Beluga with Pam was a special treat.
When she was not sewing, beading or walking her beloved dogs, she was gardening or trading seeds with other avid gardeners. Her garden was bountiful, but the Alaska climate proved too challenging to grow the tomatoes she remembered from her youth.
Pam is survived by her devoted partner, Stephon; her big sisters, Mary, Glynda and Andi; 10 nieces and nephews; 20 great-nieces and nephews; and nine great-great nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her family and many friends. Family will remember her privately later this summer.
Those who wish to honor Pam may donate in her memory to the current shelter program at Home Animal Friends, P.O. Box 2300, Homer, AK 99603.
