HEBRON -- Stephen A. Nichols, 54, of Hebron, formerly of Mexico, passed away unexpectedly and way too soon on March 16, 2013.

Born in Rumford on March 29, 1958, he was a son of Gilbert and Ruperta (Kerr) Nichols. Steve grew up on Granite Street in Mexico and was a graduate of Mexico High School. He attended the University of Maine at Machias and served in the United States Army.

Steve was a self-employed carpenter and property manager. Steve loved sports of all kinds, playing on many local teams as a young man. He was a fan of the Steelers, Red Sox and Celtics, often placing friendly bets with friends, but given the choice he’d rather watch a good high school game. He was really looking forward to March Madness. Steve also loved trapping with his good friend Mike Orf. He also enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting and trapping.

Steve was a member of Rumford Falls Aerie #1248, FOE, Club Le Paresseux and the Sons of the American Legion.

Steve is survived by his fianceé, Vernice Brooks of Hebron; sisters, Charlene Shaw and husband, Arthur of Mexico, Charlotte Pierce and husband, Paul of Mexico; a brother, James Nichols and wife, Clemma of Rumford; nephews, Joshua Shaw and Daniel Pierce; nieces, Brianna Shaw and Heather Hodsdon. Steve had too many special friends to mention, but kept up with everyone on Facebook. He was predeceased by his parents, and his sister, Janet Newbury.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Meader & Son Funeral Home, 3 Franklin St., Rumford, with Pastor Shepherd Swain officiating. Friends are invited call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Thursday prior to the service. Those who desire may contribute to the Stephen Nichols Fund, c/o James Nichols, 179 Wyman Hill Rd., P.O. Box 2, Rumford, ME 04276 in his memory. Interment in the spring will be in the Farrington Morton Cemetery, Mexico.
