Maude Davey Stanley
RUMFORD -– Maude Davey Stanley, died peacefully at her residence on Piscataquis Street, Rumford on April 26, 2011, surrounded by her loving family. She was 103 years and ten months old.
Maude was born June 22, 1907 in Greenfield, MA, the daughter of Charles and Grace (Sylvester) Davey and the step-daughter of Earl Spaulding. She lived in Jersey City, NJ and Schenectady, NY before moving to Mexico, ME. Maude attended schools in Greenfield, MA and Jersey City, NJ. She attended high school at Oak Grove Seminary and graduated from Mexico High School in 1925. Maude then attended Gorham Teachers College.
Maude lived all her 103 years to the fullest. She loved music, dance and theater. In her younger years, Maude and her husband wrote, produced, and performed plays for the community. Maude was a devout Baptist and an extremely generous person. She was actively involved in local philanthropy throughout her entire life.
She was a true matriarch of her family. She loved her children, grandchildren, and extended family and often entertained them with stories of her life. Her family appreciated and loved her sharp sense of humor and tales of the past. Maude also kept a meticulous record of the Davey and Stanley family histories for her family to enjoy for years to come.
Maude was formerly the president of the Mexico PTA and a former member of the Mexico Grange. She and her husband lived in Rumford summers and Florida in the winters.
She married her husband of 65 years, C. Edward Stanley Sr. in Mexico on August 17, 1927. He died Dec. 28, 1992. Survivors include her grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Kevin and Nora Stanley of Peru; a grandson, Steve Stanley of Portland; a grandson, Scott Stanley of Montana; a granddaughter, Beth Wilkinson of Montana; a grandson, Marc Dupill of New Hampshire; a granddaughter-in-law, Linda Dupill of Peru; a special niece, Sandra Vinton of Massachusetts; a half-sister, Bette Hodsdon; a son-in-law, Robert Dupill Sr. of Florida; and five great-grandchildren, Emily and Natalie Dupill of Peru, Hannah and Mitchell Stanley of Peru, and Cory Lyn Navoy of New Hampshire.
Maude was predeceased by her husband, Edward; a daughter, Gloria Dupill; a son, Charles Stanley; and two grandsons, Robert E. Dupill II and Gary Dupill.
Graveside services will be conducted 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Demerritt Cemetery, West Peru, with Pastor John Gensel officiating. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to the Oncology Department, c/o Rumford Hospital, 420 Franklin St., Rumford, ME 04276 in her memory.
