Lilla Mae Hodgson Taylor Gillis

AUBURN -- Lilla Mae Hodgson Taylor Gillis, 82, completed her lifelong puzzle when she placed the last piece in place on January 12, 2011. Lilla was surrounded by her family during her final journey while at the Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn.

Lilla was born in Roxbury on June 12, 1928, the daughter of Leroy Hodgson and Thelma Glover. She was fortunate to have another father in her life, Joseph Hickey.

Lilla attended schools in Auburn and Rumford. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and Snowshoe Club for many years. Over the years, she was also a member of the Eagles Club, the Rumford/Mexico Women’s Horseshoe league and she also played on many bowling leagues at Oxford Lanes.

She worked as a clipper at J.A. Thurston Company for over 30 years. She also worked in area shoe shops, Diamond Match, and as a volunteer for the Rumford information booth.

Lilla had a zest for life and knew how to make people smile. Her spunky attitude was admired by all those that were fortunate enough to have known her. A day didn’t go by that she didn’t make a memory for someone.

Lilla is survived by her sons, George Taylor and wife, Myrtle of Livermore Falls, and Lewis Taylor of Seattle, WA; her daughters, Beth Soubble and husband, Mike of Rumford, Thelma Giberson and husband, Linwood of Rumford, Jennith Glover and husband, Chris of Rumford, Ruth Hunt and husband, John of Corinna, and Roseanna Bradley and her fiancé, Robert Vanadestine of Skowhegan. Lilla was blessed with 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.

She is also survived by the following siblings, Alton Hodgson and wife, Aletha of Rumford, Hattie Freeman and husband, John of Byron, John Hodgson and wife, Theresa of Rumford, Jean Arsenault of Rumford, Mavis Varnum Powell of Mexico, and Jody Flagg and husband, John of Turner.

She was predeceased by her parents; her two husbands, George “Eb” Taylor and Warren “John” Gillis; daughters, Wendy Gillis and Gail Morgan; her sister, Anne Touchette; her brother, Henry Hodgson; and a grandson, Seth Giberson.

Lilla’s family would like to thank the Staff of Androscoggin Hospice House for their wonderful care and compassion.
