When is a loan not a loan?

To the Editor:

When is a loan not a loan?

At a recent Dixfield special town meeting designed to overthrow the will of the people and acquire a $100,000 loan for sewer work, we heard this loan would cost nothing and sewer rates would not be increased. One man even stated that this is a “no-brainer” for if it costs nothing, then let’s vote for the loan.

So, whereas in November 2010, the voters turned down the loan, by clever manipulation, the officials overturned the people’s vote.

Some have said it is shameful for people to grumble about proceedings of town government when they fail to attend hearings and meetings.

I say, attending hearings and meetings that are conducted with the mentality that a loan costs nothing, corrupts the common sense of the people and is an attempt to make fools of us.

Our voice is our vote, except when manipulation takes that away.
