The Basket Lady
In the Good Humor Town, basket lady put together six thank you baskets for some every day earthly angels that showed a kindness to others in word or by deed.
Somehow along the way of making up the baskets, beans came to mind. In the South, eating lots of beans is a way of life but you must have cornbread to scoop up the juices from the beans. Yummy!
A little household hint about how to beautify your home with beans. Make table art with leftover dry beans. Find a clear, tall, skinny vase and fill it with different types of beans. Create contrasts by layering colors and sizes, then display it as a striking centerpiece, or use it to hold silk flowers.
Beans, beans, are good for your heart, cholesterol and weight. Yes, beans help to keep you slimmer and in fact, may be the single best food for weight loss.
One study found that people who eat them regularly weigh less than non-bean-eaters, even though they eat more calories each day. Not only are they slimmer, but people who eat beans also tend to get more fiber, potassium, and magnesium, plus eat less fat and added sugar.
The whole world could surely use some more beans especially in a warm crock pot with brown sugar and bacon mixed in for the flavor of a lifetime.
Okay, I’ve digressed a little bit, now back to the thank you baskets. I chose wicker baskets with handles, pastel colors, with a deep bottom for layering shredded paper or small pieces of cardboard cut in to strips for holding glass jars of beans in place or just bags of beans.
The trick is to assemble the glass, cans, or bags of beans without crowding them together so as to make the basket too heavy on one side especially if you want to add diced canned tomatoes and several boxes of quick cornbread mix (to pop in to the oven). And to add a personal touch, I bought bouquets of fresh spring flowers-however, forever flowers will do just as well. Thank you, dear earthly angels very much and that ain’t just beans, either.
Every day kindness angels are here among us and they are waiting to be of service to us, just ask.
The Basket Lady’s theme is: Get a basket-Give a basket.
Kindness not only counts but it adds up! We miss your kindness every day, Dot Sanchas! Until then, smile and live in the present.
