The Basket Lady
Good day, all! Life’s a happening and how wonderful it is to be a part of all that goes with it. Life’s ebbs and flows, highs and lows, along the journey, we merrily go.
Basket Lady enjoys promoting worthwhile community events in the River Valley knowing that plans can change fast and sometimes they change for reasons beyond our control. Suffice it to say that dear Brenda Swan was most apologetic when she called with the news that the Sheltering Wing’s open house/luncheon scheduled for July 14 at the old Peru Elementary School had to be postponed and there wasn’t enough time to let folks know in advance so at the eleventh hour, a notice was posted regarding the postponement on the door to the Sheltering Wing.
Friend, if you showed up to donate a package of diapers or for the open house and luncheon, don’t despair because there will be another opportunity to help out the Sheltering Wing with your gifts of kindness and goodwill. If you want to donate baby clothes, diapers, a crib would be icing on the cake, contact Brenda Swan at 562-4822, and she’ll gladly assist you.
Recently, Basket Lady gave away 10 sunshine baskets in the River Valley and every time a basket is given away, I think about dear Dot Sanchas. Dot was famous for her basket projects and often could be found manning a booth at the St. A. & J. Church fundraisers or at the Hope Association’s Octoberfest always ready with a line that pulled at your heart strings until you gave in to whatever it was that she wanted. I loved observing her work a room.
Dot would call over some unsuspecting soul to look at her baskets that had unwittingly made the mistake of walking anywhere near her table then, she’d give them a smile that could melt butter and before long, they were buying a book of raffle tickets instead of just a single ticket for Santa’s Helpers. Dot’s good works were always done with others in mind and thinking about how creative she was still makes me smile.
As you go about your busy day, take a moment if you can’t spare five minutes to thank yourself for all of the good and kind things that you do for your family, friends, and community. Thank yourself for all of the wonderful creative gifts that you give to others whether it’s a card, a flower, a gift, a poem, or a basket.
Thank yourself; appreciate all that you are. Show gratitude to your God and to your steadfast guardian angels. Meet the day with freshness and renewal; it’s a new idea for some of you to thank yourself but do it anyway because you deserve it.
We miss your kindness every day, Dot Sanchas! Until then, smile and live in the present.
