The Basket Lady

In the Good Humor Town, Basket Lady walked to the Island Indulgence Day Spa to get a haircut dressed in full rain gear, field hat, and lugging a handy-dandy umbrella but still managed to get soaked right down to the bone by a pitiless pouring rain.

As I traipsed through the door shaking off the water from my coat, I looked around the salon and playfully announced, “I ought to be nominated for loyal customer of the year for walking to my appointment in all this rain.”

Hair stylist, Lisa, didn’t miss a beat as she met me in the doorway and declared, “You are duly recognized as the loyal customer of the year and here’s the award.” She leaned over and put a sample package of shampoo and conditioner in my hand along with a big ole Kansas grin.

After some wonderful laughter and a haircut, on the way home, I found several puddles of water and jumped up and down in them, laughing with delight and playing with my inner child.

I thought about Betty Wood and wished that she was playing in the puddles with me. It’s wonderful how the memory of a funny story or a particular incident can bring joy to my heart and laughter to my lips years later.

Laughter has the power to turn a seemingly sad day into a happy one. It’s good for me and for those with whom I share my laughter-sharing as much joy as I can each day through laughter and a smile allows me to be an ambassador of goodwill.

What a privilege it is to share the gladness of my soul with others!

The following angels in training have made a difference by showing a basketful of kindness in word or by deed: Dr. Gary Stuer, Mary Benson, Rhonda Shaw, Lori Grassette, Donna Landry, Gerri Boivin, Anne Wood, Dr. Jeffrey Lynds, Norman Robichaud, Patty Duguay, Rumford Hannaford Pharmacy, Rumford Rite Aid Pharmacy, Donna White, Nancy O. Demings, Lorraine Nadeau and soda-bottle friend, Charlotte at Free Store, and Irene Haynes.

Friends, kindness not only counts but it adds up!

Love…blooms where kindness is planted.

We miss you every day, Dot Sanchas! Until then, smile and live in the present.
