The Basket Lady
Glorious September! How we long for your crimson red trees in autumn’s glow, those golden days burst forth and the colors explode from out of the ground; Oh how wonderful! And yet, so profound. God’s hands have painted your hues in shades we’ll always remember; Come again! Glorious September.
Okay, Basket Lady admits to penning the rhyme and sometimes just having a little fun with ya’ll but gosh, I’m ready for some football! It’s officially autumn when football season begins for Mtn. Valley (go Falcons), Patriots, Dolphins, and the Carolina Gamecocks. Autumn and football go together like Thanksgiving turkey and a Macy Day parade.
Autumn brings nature’s usual accents that beautify your home or your dining room table and in a few weeks, the holiday mood will hit and the urge to decorate will beckon; thinking about costs and getting a good bargain is as close as…the back yard. Decorating with branches that you’ve found (put the kids outside to do some branch hunting), is simple and inexpensive especially if you have a glass vase or a substitute clear bottle; the Dollar Tree has a variety of vases that you can choose from and for the small price of a dollar, a modern centerpiece will be yours to enjoy.
Here are five quick steps to your natural centerpiece. Look outside for fallen branches. Wash the branches and dry them with a towel. Find a glass vase big enough to support the weight of the branches so they remain upright. Place the largest, heaviest piece in the vase first. This will be the visual anchor of the arrangement. Add in smaller, simpler branches, adjusting until your arrangement looks balanced and artistic. You can do the same five steps to get a lovely centerpiece if you chose to place your arrangement into a basket (make sure the base will lift up the branches).
A golden autumn brings up a metaphor that I’d like to share: A golden necklace is made from many small links, all perfectly interlocked, and our lives are formed from days, years, and decades of interconnected moments. Will these moments be forged from fear or love? We have the freedom to choose how we respond to others and to our circumstances. Our relationships are changed when we choose kindness instead of criticism, forgiveness instead of bitterness. When we offer others understanding instead of judgment, kindness prevails, and we connect heart to heart. When we choose love, our lives become a precious chain of interconnected golden moments.
Give someone a golden moment of kindness today. We miss your kindness every day, Dot Sanchas! Until then, smile and live in the present.
