The Basket Lady
In the Good Humor Town, kindness counts as various volunteers, professionals, and citizens have shown a kindness to someone in word or deed.
Several people called me at home this week to share their stories about passing on to others the theme of, get a basket-give a basket.
The Basket Lady projects, 90 percent of the time means a literal basket is involved. However, possibly 10 percent of the time something else is “given” that metaphorically represents a basket.
For example, Valerie Jacobs, an occupational therapist at the Rumford Hospital, donated two backpacks for the Basket Lady to give to a family in need filled with inspirational and nutritional reading materials, gender appropriate toiletry items and winter attire.
It was such fun to see the smiles on the faces of the recipients and one of the individuals stated that she really needed a new backpack!
Basket Lady has christened her collaboration with Valerie as, “Backpacking for God.”
Sandee Conley recently made up a sunshine basket that she presented to a female soldier, just home from having served her country and I could hear the excitement in her voice as she said, “I passed on a basket to someone just like your get-a-basket theme and what fun that was.” I knew immediately that Sandee was filled with the happiness that giving brings.
Michael Belskis, a giver, like his beloved mother, Millie, donated a twin mattress set for a family in need and when he realized that they didn’t have a bed frame, promptly went to Marden’s and bought one.
It was a beautiful set and the grateful family acknowledged Michael‘s gift by their joy.
The giver and the receiver share in a joy that words cannot describe because it’s a feeling that has to be experienced.
The school of life is in session so sit up straight and tall in your seats.
The next three letters of the alphabet are:
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Show someone a kindness today and share in their happiness.
We miss you every day, Dot Sanchas. Until then, smile and live in the present!
