The Basket Lady
In Auburn, recently, The Perfect Basket; a new business in town had a grand opening and naturally, the Basket Lady is thrilled to have another basket ally.
A lady in Lewiston that goes by the moniker, “The Basket Case,” received an award from the Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce for her creative gift baskets and for her community altruism.
This afternoon, as I walked past the Holy Savior Elementary School, a half-dozen or so wicker baskets filled with all sorts of goodies lined the window sill in one of the classrooms.
The folks at the Mexico Library are having their annual basket fundraiser and I’m sure that they will do well especially when the kids see the hot wheels, video games and movies baskets.
There’s just something special, no, extra-special about a basket; and basket lovers everywhere know what I mean.
Dear Dot Sanchas recognized that extra-special something a long time before the rest of us caught on and often, at the Oktoberfest, a decorated Christmas basket or two could be seen on her table to be raffled-off for much needed funds for Santa’s helpers.
Time goes by fast, in the blink of an eye. I’m understating this obvious fact about time, I realize.
However, three years ago, on the Oct. 28, our beloved Dot Sanchas; friend, mentor and community leader “passed away” into the arms of eternal light and love-smiling lovingly upon us every day.
Together, our “secret” basket projects took on a life of their own for 14 years; and those times were spent being in service to others, without expectation, in order to nurture souls.
Friends, get a basket-give a basket and fill it up with your kindness. Color it with the gifts of hope, happiness and love. Tie a bow around the basket and then give it with an open heart.
Now, in the school of life, sit up straight and tall in your seats. Pay attention!
Life’s lessons 101, the ABC’S of faith:
Be mindful. Do not Neglect the gift that is within you. Owe no one.
Kindness not only counts but it adds up! We miss you every day, Dot Sanchas!
Until then, smile and live in the present.
